Wolfie's Call of the Wild Huskies
Zyphr - Command Leader - Retired
Zyphr, an Alaskan Husky, is the finest sled dog I have ever known.  On May 18th, 2010 this amazing husky will turn 15 years old! He is the great-grandson of Andy, the most winning lead dog in the history of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Zyphr has run thousands of miles in harness and once possessed the most powerful, graceful lope I have ever seen. I have even witnessed him crash through a solid 2 x 8 fence board without breaking his stride.

He has finished countless races including the Junior Yukon Quest, Race to the Sky, and the 2005 IFSS World Championships. Zyphr is a very devoted and courgeous husky who once bit a full grown grizzily bear who threatened to attack his former master. Now nearly blind and missing most of his teeth, Zyphr is always at my side during daily walks and enjoys cozy nights sleeping on the soft warm couch.
Rose - Trail Leader  1996 - 2009
On October 31, 2009, Rose, our jet black huskie mix, passed away at age 13 years. "Rosie" was sometimes called our "phantom dog" because she was rarely visible in photographs and her passing on Halloween is thought provoking. This very vocal little girl was one of our rescued dogs from the county animal shelter. For nearly 11 years Rose ran as both team dog and trail leader. She was known as the kennel cheerleader because she was one of the most enthusiastic dogs to hit the trail  - and bark, bark, bark during hookup! Through her lifetime, she ran countless races and loved running in harness more than anything in the world. By age 13, Rosie had become completely deaf but never lost her love for being out on the trail. There was never a dog who enjoyed the trail more than this very special "rescue" husky. Rosie ran her last race in October 2007. Her last run in harness was March 2008 on a beautiful snowy trail with her team mates in the Cascades. She is greatly missed, especially by her "Mommy" Judy and will never be forgotten. Until we meet again Rosie.
Lars - Command Leader- 1994 - 2009
Fuzzie - Team Dog
Fuzzie, a 3 year old Alaskan Malamute, is a darling girl with a cheerful and playful personality. Because she is somewhat petite for her breed, she is able to keep pace with her Siberian Husky kennel mates out on the trail. Fuzzie particulary enjoys her daily free romps and giving chase to birds across the pasture just for fun. Fuzzie finished her first sled dog race before age two. She is very best friends with Teek, one of our Siberian Huskies who loves to cavort and play with her.

This very sweet girl is always the first to greet visitors with her happy "wooooo - wooooooooo" and absolutely loves hugs and kisses. Fuzzie came to us shortly after Wolfie's death and very nearly shares the same birthday. Her registered name is "Miracles Happen". And indeed they do.

On November 19, 2009, I helped one of our very special retired sled dogs, Lars, cross the Rainbow Bridge. Lars would have celebrated his 15th birthday on Dec 20th.

I hardly know where to begin with the story of this remarkable Alaska Husky's legacy and racing career. Before he came to live with me in 2003, Lars had already won just about every race he ever led a team in, including the Ashton Dog Derby, the oldest sled dog race in North America. During his many years with me, Lars ran lead and taught me all he knew. He was a delicately boned Husky with beautiful blue eyes and a luxurious white coat. Pound for pound, he was the hardest working dog in our kennel. He was retired in 2007 at age 12.

He will be greatly missed - but only until we meet again. In the meantime, he is with his kennel mate and best canine friend, Rosie, who passed away just 19 days earlier. These dogs just seem to have their own way.
